Feeling Tipsy

Feeling Tipsy

I got Kevin an Indo Board for his birthday.  He thought it would be a great idea to try it out at 1am after drinking most of the evening.  I promise, I tried to advise him otherwise but there’s just no reasoning with the birthday boy.

What you are about to see is quite sad.  But the more you watch it, the funnier it gets.  Replay this puppy at least once – it’s totally worth it :)

GloBULL Warming

GloBULL Warming

Um…really? No significant global warming since 1995? Is that why the PNW has averaged 50 degrees in FEBRUARY? And is that why we don’t get to use our ski cross tickets now? BOOOO!

Vancouver 2010 cancels ‘general admission standing room’ tickets to snowboard halfpipe, ski cross and snowboard parallel giant slalom events at Cypress Mountain Tickets to be refunded

Feb 16, 2010

West Vancouver, BC ― General admission standing room tickets have been cancelled for Olympic men’s and ladies’ snowboard halfpipe on February 17 and 18; ski cross on February 21 and 23; and snowboard parallel giant slalom on February 26 and 27 at Cypress Mountain. Tickets will be refunded, said the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC).

Heavy warm rains on Saturday and Sunday have made the general admission standing room area at the Cypress snowboard stadium unsafe for spectators. The rains washed away almost a foot of snow in the area where the standing room area was to be located. General admission standing room tickets for men’s and ladies’ snowboard cross events were also previously cancelled for February 15 and 16.

With safety the top priority and with snowboard events taking place daily, there is insufficient snow to move and build the standing room area back up at the Cypress snowboard stadium. VANOC has protected sufficient contingency snow for field of play at Cypress Mountain.

“Our senior management and venue team have spent significant time on site to try and find a way to accommodate spectators in the standing room areas for the events. We’ve exhausted all avenues but it just wasn’t possible to make the area safe for spectators,” said Caley Denton, VANOC’s vice president of ticketing and consumer marketing.

This cancellation and refund will affect approximately 20,000 spectators.

Blogiversary

Blogiversary

One whole year of blogging. Honestly, I can hardly believe how much I’ve enjoyed keeping it.

What started as a D induced travel blog, turned into a way to keep in touch with family and friends I don’t see as often as I should. Ironically enough, most of the people who read this darn thing know my every move anyway.

I love reading other peoples’ blogs. It’s such a great distraction – usually from work, let’s be honest. I get jealous with how funny they are, how entertaining they can be and how much money some make. I want to do this for a living too, darn it! But these professional bloggers have so much “stuff” to talk about. They can make a crappy product at Target, just fascinating. So fascinating, that not only do millions of people religiously read about it, they run straight to Target to buy said crappy product. Someday, maybe I too will start trends on the blog. Until then, you’re stuck with lame “this is what we’re up to” stories.

You keep coming back though, you 12 readers, you. And I love you for it!

WTF Blanket

WTF Blanket

How did the Snuggie become like a top ten Christmas gift? You can call it a joke gift all you want, but it’s totally not. Everyone secretly wants one but would NEVER admit it.

Now, we did not buy one.  Nor did I think I even wanted one.  But, now that I own one, I’m quite pleased with our new Husky Snuggie.  We won it at an “As Seen On TV” gift exchange.  I will admit, I stole for it…but it really was one of the better prizes. Really.

If you haven’t seen it, you gotta check out this Snuggie parody. It’s hi.lar.ious. And I can answer my phone easier. So there!

Bell Boy

Bell Boy

There’s no easy way around it.  Kevin has Bell’s Palsy.  When the right side of his face didn’t work Saturday morning, we found ourselves at the ER.  The good news, it should go away.  The bad news, they don’t know how long he’ll look like Lyle Lovett (For the record, I did not come up with that!).  Could be a few weeks or a few months.  Most often it’s just a few weeks so we’re hopeful.

Don’t you worry though, he doesn’t hurt.  Except for when he eats – his mouth gets tired.  And his eye dries out because he can’t blink very well. Otherwise, he’s just fine.

This is how babe smiles now.  He’s still adorable to me :)

Figgy Me Silly

Figgy Me Silly

My work participated in the annual Figgy Pudding caroling competition, a benefit for the Pike Market Senior Center and the Downtown Foodbank.  Despite our best vocal efforts, I think we frightened more downtown shoppers than got them to donate.  The mayor donated to us though!

We sang all of the classics, over and over and over, including  “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” which is what peaked our figgy interest…just what the heck is figgy pudding?  Neither Kevin or I have had it so could not understand why they  insist on getting some figgy pudding and not going until they get some.  I mean, according to the song, you pretty much can’t have a Merry Christmas if you don’t have figgy pudding.

So we made some.

And were not impressed.  It smelled good while baking…but it really doesn’t deserve two whole song verses.

We also made a Fig and Blue Cheese Stuffed Pork Tenderloin and Fig-Pecan Macaroons which were both pretty tasty.  And we went to Cupcake Royale and tried their Figgy Pudding cupcake, which was much, much, much much, better than what we made.

In conclusion, we don’t want your figgy pudding.  So don’t bring it right here.

We do though, [in tune, please] Wish You a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Even More Thankful

Even More Thankful

Today is such a great day to reflect and think about what we’re thankful for in our lives.  Thanksgiving is the unofficial start of the holiday season, where the warm fuzzies start to embrace you and simple things, like pumpkin pie and Christmas lights make us happy.  There’s something different about this time of year and I wonder why it can’t always be warm fuzzy land.  Then I’m slapped in the face by work and sadness and stress.  Life.

I was recently turned on to a book called Even Happier by Dentler.  I’m not far into the book, but so far I can absolutely, without a doubt say the first chapter was the best and will probably be the most influential to me.  It’s titled “On Being Grateful” and gives you an assignment at the end to list five things a day that you are grateful for.  It could be anything.  Of course I’m grateful for my family who is forced to love me no matter what.  For Kevin who does the same (by choice even!).  My friends who are the most amazing people I know.  But what else makes me smile? Husky basketball, Starbucks serving peppermint hot chocolate, couch time and keeping this blog are among the many.  I don’t know why it was such a revelation to me.  But it works.  When gratitude is a habit, we don’t need special events to keep us happy.

So, this Thanksgiving, I’m just as thankful today as I was yesterday and as I’ll be tomorrow.  Specifically, today, I’m thankful for all these things:

Jason, who continues to invite us up to Whistler, year after year.

Thinking about Kevin getting to snowboard today with Jason.  I know he’s having a blast his first time out this season.

Being lazy and not feeling guilty because I literally have nothing to do and nowhere to be.  I was going to snow shoe but there’s not enough snow on the ground…..so I’m still in pajamas, working on picture books.

Cousin’s pumpkin bread recipe, that I’m snacking on right now.

Still getting to eat turkey and pumpkin pie with Lauren and Co., despite being in Canada, where it’s not officially Thanksgiving.

Avoiding the “Black Friday” lunatics by shopping on “Black Wednesday.” (We hit the outlets yesterday on our way up to Whistler.  We got all the deals – so we were told – and missed all the crazed bargain shoppers.)

Part of me wishes I was in Spokane right now with my people, but knowing I’ll be there soon for Christmas and knowing they wish I was there too, makes it ok that I’m not.

Happy, Happy Thanksgiving!

Cake Down

Cake Down

I’m sure many of you have heard of the Cake Wrecks website.  It’s pretty hilarious.  And sad.  Mostly hilarious.

Here’s my recent cake wreck:

This is what it was supposed to look like.

This is what it was supposed to look like.

This is what it looked like. A big pile of poo.

This is what it looked like. A big pile of poo.

Luckily, it tasted much better than it looked.
