Figgy Me Silly

My work participated in the annual Figgy Pudding caroling competition, a benefit for the Pike Market Senior Center and the Downtown Foodbank. Despite our best vocal efforts, I think we frightened more downtown shoppers than got them to donate. The mayor donated to us though!

We sang all of the classics, over and over and over, including “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” which is what peaked our figgy interest…just what the heck is figgy pudding? Neither Kevin or I have had it so could not understand why they insist on getting some figgy pudding and not going until they get some. I mean, according to the song, you pretty much can’t have a Merry Christmas if you don’t have figgy pudding.

So we made some.

And were not impressed. It smelled good while baking…but it really doesn’t deserve two whole song verses.

We also made a Fig and Blue Cheese Stuffed Pork Tenderloin and Fig-Pecan Macaroons which were both pretty tasty. And we went to Cupcake Royale and tried their Figgy Pudding cupcake, which was much, much, much much, better than what we made.

In conclusion, we don’t want your figgy pudding. So don’t bring it right here.

Austin City Limits

Austin City Limits Music Festival is an annual three-day music festival in Austin’s Zilker Park. The Festival brings together more than 130 bands on eight stages and attracts a crowd of about 65,000 visitors each day. This is their eigth year.

This is who we saw:

Phoenix - Usually what would happen is we’d be driving and a Phoenix song would come on the iPod and one of us would say “Oh, I like this, who is it?” And it was always Phoenix. The Frenchies put on a solid show.

Raphael Saadiq - Kevin loves Raphael Saadiq (from Tony! Toni! Tone!). This is his favorite song.

K’Naan - I felt really cool because I had heard of K’Naan from Mohamed at work. Somali born rapper, emigrated to Canada. Raps about his life growing up. He really engaged the crowd and was fun to watch.

John Legend – LOVE him.

Them Crooked Vultures - Dave Grohl’s new band with Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin).

Kings of Leon - SO GOOD! We’ve wanted to see the Tennessee brothers and cousin for awhile now. Eddie Vedder came out and closed the show with them, singing Slow Night, So Long. AWESOME! *Two very random side notes* Eddie Vedder is wearing the same shirt he wore the Monday before at the Seattle Pearl Jam concert (also an amazing show). Later, we accidently ran into one of the fans that caught a tambourine Eddie threw into the crowd.

Another day on our feet, we were pretty beat but we had heard about this free after party at the abandoned, soon to be demolished, Austin Power Plant. We managed to get wrist bands to get in but quickly found out the party was outside. Only VIPs were allowed inside the power plant. Not wanting to kick it with the all ages crowd we left to close out one of the bars on 5th, dancing the night away.

Pretty Peas

With a pretty weak Bumbershoot lineup, I wasn’t super excited to spend the entire weekend there (nor could I – see previous post). But I was actually super excited to see the Black Eyed Peas. I’ve been sort of infatuated with them lately. It started with “Boom Boom Pow” – how can you not love Fergie’s line “I’m so 3000 and 8. You so 2000 and late.” So awesome. And now every time I hear “I Gotta Feeling” I get so excited. Maybe it’s the simple lyrics I like, I don’t know. It’s just so catchy and fun – a total head bobber. We (yes, we!) love to blast it in the car and sing and head bob along.

Since Kevin gets free Bumbershoot tickets from his work, it made it really easy to go for A show and not feel guilty. So, we went and saw The Peas and boy did they give us a show! They are really good entertainers. I’ve said many times that I can’t stand Fergie. She’s a total butterface, I hate the London Bridge and Big Girls Don’t Cry songs and how did she end up with Josh Duhamel anyway? Now…weeeell, she’s no Beyonce, but I kind of dig her. She seems real.

Oprah’s hip to their beat too because they opened up her 24th season on the streets of Chicago. Oprah’s crew suprised her and set up what I think is the World’s Largest Flash Mob to date. Oprah’s reaction was pretty cute. She usually annoys me with her “know it all, I am the queen, I am Oprah” attitude but she was genuinely surprised and was lovin’ the Peas (watch her at the 2:45 mark – so great!). Thank God for DVR. Let’s just say I’ve watched it a few times…and don’t plan on deleting it anytime soon.

My Crush

Kevin and I went to see Flight of the Conchords the other night. It was a great show, as expected. They started the set with “Too Many Dicks (On The Dance Floor),” which is the taping we got to see when in New York last October- Sooo, yeah, we’re pretty sure that was their shout out to us- Annnyway, what I didn’t expect was to fall for the foul mouthed Arj Barker, who opened up the show.

He was Hi.lar.ious. *Swoon*

One Shining Moment

Absolutely, without a doubt, my favorite time of year = March Madness. It happened in high school when AME and I discovered One Shining Moment. Many, many years later we still call each other just to sing it, we call our friends and family when we’re together and sing it to them, we’ve tried to introduce the song to everyone we know. It’s quite hysterical. There’s not a single time we get together that we don’t at least talk about One Shining Moment. And so, I must share with you, what March Madness is really all about.

Beyonce is No Joke

I hadn’t planned to let the world know that I actually paid money (not a lot) to see Beyonce but it turned out to be a worthwhile story to tell.

D and I went and were really excited that the other wanted to go because we were embarrassed and had assumed nobody else would go – or admit to wanting to go (KMJ was supposed to come too but she skipped off to Vegas with Sara instead). There we were hanging out in our seats surrounded by giggly teenage girls, yelling at each other to talk so we could hear, when across the big screen it told us to text Beyonce to get upgraded seats. So we did. And D won! We turned into giggly teenage girls and raced to get our FRONT ROW SEATS!!

Being excited to see Beyonce is one thing. Seeing her from the first row was a whole different level of excitement. I couldn’t stop looking at her. She had dancers and a band, even shirtless guys that you could wash clothes off their chests; but all I wanted to look at was her. I was mesmerized I guess, by her flawless face, amazing moves and facial expressions that made me think she was singing only to us. (We’re pretty positive she waved at D and smiled at me while I was taking pictures.) All along I was less excited about her singing and more excited about the production itself- but I underestimated. She is good. Really, really good. Who cares that she rhymes “minute” with “minute.”
