Weekend Warriors

Weekend Warriors

At our house you can tell it’s summertime when our calendars grow exponentially. As of last weekend, it’s official, summer is here! We packed so much funness into our weekend that I am impressed with us.

This is what we did:

Went to Spencer’s little league game.
Met Kevin’s Mom and friends for ArtWalk, Part Deux.
Ate, Drank and Puffy Paint at D and Dip’s Baby Party.
Killed time at the U-District Street Fair.
Cheered for the M’s (v. Boston) with Pete and Jenn – from the front row.
Danced at Anj’s Birthday Prom Party.
Beat the Bridge with old co-workers.
Over dosed on cheese at Cheese Fest in the Market.
Tried out Paddle Boarding in the Sound. (Kevin and Ambrose were fast – I was not.  And people are actually surfing on these things off of cruise ship/tanker waves right off of Discovery park!  Crazy, I know?!)

I was so happily exhausted I felt like I needed a day off to re-coop from my days off. I gotta get back into summer shape, pronto!

Friday was Kevin’s photography Open House at Fresh Flours - a stop along the Phinney Ridge/Greenwood Community Annual ArtWalk.  And if I do say so m’self, a great success!

Kevin, kind of drove me crazy preparing for the big night (it’s ok, I can say that because he probably won’t read this!).  He stressed himself out and in doing so, lost some of the excitement. But as we were setting up, a women came in and said, “Are you the artist?  I’ve been trying to get hold of you, but I haven’t heard back.  I want that one!”, as she pointed to one of his new pieces of the Golden Gate Bridge.   She was a lot of fun to talk to, even for me, the girlfriend.  Kevin told her about the shot and how it was all natural lighting, very little, if any touch up work done.  She explained how she used to live in San Francisco and how much she loved the photo because it reminded her of home.  Several times she said “That’s my bridge.”  It was really sweet to see how much the picture meant to her.  It emphasized to me how everyone’s tastes are different.  And while one person might not have loved the picture of the Golden Gate Bridge, this woman connected with it and it meant something to her.  It made her happy.  As I listened to her talk, it made me really proud.  Kevin just made this woman really happy through his photos.  Even better, during their brief conversation, she also talked herself into buying the other photo at Union Square in San Francisco for her father, who happens to live there.  Something she thought he would enjoy as a Father’s Day gift.  She thanked us as she left with a great big smile on her face.  The story gets better though, because Bridge lady came back, this time with her family to show off the new art she’d just purchased.  She introduced everyone to Kevin, the artist.  She was still grinning from ear to ear.

The rest of the night, Kevin was grinning from ear to ear.  No longer stressed, just in the moment mingling and signing photos for both strangers and friends.  I was so proud of Kevi Kev- I was grinning from ear to ear too.  It was gratifying seeing him in the spotlight; excited and sincere, talking about his work.

If you didn’t make it to the ArtWalk on Friday, never fear.  His stuff will be up in Fresh Flours for the rest of May.  If you’re in the Phinney ‘hood, check it out!  And someday soon, thanks to Andy P, Kevin will have a functioning website too.  He’s so fancy now!

Birthday Bloomies

Birthday Bloomies

Ever since I was little, I’ve wanted Bloomsday to officially fall on my Birthday so I could run it “on my birthday.” I don’t know why it was something I was always so excited about. I think back then, I wouldn’t have wanted to run the whole way. And back then it was cool to carry around “Happy Birthday” balloons so everyone would know it’s your birthday. But being as old as I am, it didn’t really matter anymore. All I wanted to do was run the whole way without stopping so it would be over sooner!

We did have a fantastic birthday weekend. Kevi celebrated his birthday on Friday. He had a happy hour at Linda’s (and let me share it!). Then he drove KMJ, BK and me over to Spokane in his NEW CAR! It was a comfy ride and it was extra nice for me because I didn’t have to drive! Plus, his car has butt warmers – what a brilliant feature!

Once in Spokane, we hit up the Milk Bottle for lunch. No one was brave enough to have a milkshake plus a side of ice creams, like LB, the Dairy Queen, did a few years ago. We saw Wolverine (because really, there’s not much else to do in Spokane) and visited with my family. Alli takes after her Auntie with a love of cake and all things sweet. In fact, the first thing she said when she ran to me and gave me a big hug was, “Cake! Mumble, baby talk, mumble, birthday cake!” That’s my girl!

Sunday was Bloomsday of course. Kevin beat me by 2 minutes. And I didn’t beat my personal best. I’m kind of kicking myself for not training more because I have some wicked blisters on both feet. And I was actually sore the next day. I wasn’t even sore after I ran the marathon – how sad is that?! I’m either getting old or am out of shape. Or, *gulp* both.

Despite my crappy time, I love everything about Bloomsday. I love the scenic course and all of the bands along the way. I love how involved the whole city gets. If not running in the race, then volunteering. If not volunteering then out cheering on family, friends and strangers. I love the hoses and squirt guns people blast you with as you’re running by. The parties on the balconies along the course. Even how excited everyone gets just to see what color the Finisher T-shirt is. It’s such a fun event! And I kind of love saying that I had 50,000 people at my birthday party :)

New York, New York

New York, New York

I missed my Dentler so I twisted her arm to find a weekend that Kevin and I could take advantage of these screamin’ airline deals and come to visit.  We had such a great time!

We took a red-eye on Friday night, slept very little (when did Jet Blue get so uncomfortable?) and arrived in New York bright and early Saturday morning.  Dent was up early anyway to train for her upcoming tri and Shawn was up studying.  We ate a quick brunch (I had sweet potato pancakes – yum!) and headed to Queens for a Mets game.

Both the Yankee’s and the Mets got a new stadium this year.  Having never been to Shea, I can only imagine that this new ball park is a huge improvement because it is bea-u-tiful.  It felt very open and spacious.  When walking around the inside corridor you could still see through the aisles into the ball park.  There were also a lot of open spaces where people could meet up with friends in the outfield and watch the game – kind of like our beer garden at Safeco but more spread out and better.  I think we explored more than we actually watched the game.  We didn’t miss much – the Nationals were so bad!  They got clobbered by the Mets.  One guy almost got hit in the face with a routine fly ball!  Maybe because it was a nice day out, maybe because the Nats sucked so bad or maybe just because it was a bunch of New Yorkers, the crowd was fun, super loud and way into the game.  While it was nothing like the craziness that occurs at Yankee stadium, it was way more electric than our fair weather M’s fans.  They even got the wave going and it went around SIX times before it died.  SIX times.  My only complaint – they didn’t have kettle corn.

After the game we headed to Brooklyn for World Famous Pizza at Grimaldi’s.  Everyone else in New York seemed to be there too!  We waited in line for at least an hour.  We didn’t mind though because the sun was shining and it was a good way to visit with our friends. Dentler and Shawn had never been either and were glad they had “tourists” to take so they could finally have a little slice of heaven.  The pizza was delicious. Kevin claims it’s the best he’s had.  I’m a little skeptical that it’s only so good because by the time we actually got to eat, we were so starving that Domino’s would have tasted good…but whatever!

cimg4413

Dinner was followed by ice creams, also at the base of the Brooklyn bridge, also with a 30 minute line. It was worth it though. We got to watch the sun set behind the city and digest our pizza, leaving just enough room for ice creams.

Sunday, Dentler, Kevi and I went on the great cupcake hunt (see The Great NYC Cupcake Quest). We also hit Rockefeller Center, via bus, so we were above ground for a change and had a fabulous tour guide in Minda. Then we went to SoHo, did some shopping at Top Shop, the new Kate Moss store (basically a more expensive, UK version of H&M) and hit up Canal Street.  Top Shop was fun to go to but a little too “hip” for me.  The 80′s are back in a big way.  Fluorescents?  Really?  Kevin and I rounded out the day doing more shopping on 34th street before we met back up with our hosts for a yummy dinner at a Cuban joint near their house.  Good friends, good food, live music, and a Cojito (coconut mojito) was the perfect way to spend our last night in New York.

Our hosts had to work on Monday so Kevin and I were left to explore on our own.  In the morning we hit up the breakfast cart in front of Dentler’s apartment and took the subway to Ground Zero.  I have been here several times.  Once pre 9/11 with D (We had monkey fizz’s at the Top of the World!  It was our way of getting a great view while escaping the Observatory fee.) and a couple times post 9/11.  They’ve always been in different stages of construction and/or clean up.  Now, it seems construction is well under way.  We happened to be down there the same day the Airforce One incident occurred, but it must have happened before we got there because everything seemed a-ok; just a few helicopters hovering above.

The rest of the day we had planned to go to the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum but the exhibition Kevin wanted to see wasn’t on display.  Instead, we spent it exploring Central Park.  All weekend long we had 80 degree weather, so our day in the park couldn’t have been more perfect!  We pretty much walked the entire length of the park, had a yummy lunch at the Shake Shack (where they serve custard which is a combo of ice cream and soft serve), rode the carousel and ran into a very patriotic Bollywood production.  It was exhausting.

It’s hard to put in words what a great time we had.  We really had no expectations except to visit with our friends- and that probably helped our patience while standing in line for hours for the best pizza ever.  I think it mostly had to do with the great company we had all weekend.  It makes me miss my Dentler even more than before our visit.

Reykja-wha?

Reykja-wha?

Those of you that actually read this already know I have a bit of an addiction. A somewhat expensive addiction but I figure if I smoked a pack of cigarettes or had a cup of coffee every single day, that would be expensive too. But I don’t- so it evens out!

This time, it’s KMJ’s fault. She has wanted to go to Iceland ever since I’ve met her. That’s like seven years now (wow!). Seven years she’s been waiting for Iceland Air to offer a direct flight from Seattle to Reykjavik (prounounced rey-keya-vik). On August 8, KMJ’s dream will come true as she, Ambrose, JaSON, Minda and I are headed to Iceland! Who else is in?!

I can promise beautiful scenery, the best exchange rate to the US dollar in years, geothermal pools (which means spas!) and a lot of fun. I wonder though, with all of the thermal pools and geysers, if it smells of rotten eggs like in Rotorua, NZ? Who cares, we’ll be in Iceland!

I love my spontaneous friends! Woot, woot!

One Shining Moment

One Shining Moment

Absolutely, without a doubt, my favorite time of year = March Madness. It happened in high school when AME and I discovered One Shining Moment. Many, many years later we still call each other just to sing it, we call our friends and family when we’re together and sing it to them, we’ve tried to introduce the song to everyone we know. It’s quite hysterical. There’s not a single time we get together that we don’t at least talk about One Shining Moment. And so, I must share with you, what March Madness is really all about.

The Lyrics:

The ball is tipped
and there you are
you’re running for your life
you’re a shooting star
And all the years
no one knows
just how hard you worked
but now it shows…
(in) ONE SHINING MOMENT, IT’S ALL ON THE LINE
ONE SHINING MOMENT, THERE FROZEN IN TIME

But time is short
and the road is long
in the blinking of an eye
ah that moment’s gone
And when it’s done
win or lose
you always did your best
cuz inside you knew…
(that) ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU REACHED DEEP INSIDE
ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU KNEW YOU WERE ALIVE

Feel the beat of your heart
feel the wind in your face
it’s more than a contest
it’s more than a race…

And when it’s done
win or lose
you always did your best
cuz inside you knew…
(that) ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU REACHED FOR THE SKY
ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU KNEW
ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU WERE WILLING TO TRY
ONE SHINING MOMENT….

Today is the big day, friends. Don’t turn off your TVs after the Final Game. Stay tuned, watch and sing along. I’m pretty sure you’ll spread JOY throughout the world…or at least in your living room.

Beyonce is No Joke

Beyonce is No Joke

I hadn’t planned to let the world know that I actually paid money (not a lot) to see Beyonce but it turned out to be a wcimg4119orthwhile story to tell.

D and I went and were really excited that the other wanted to go because we were embarrassed and had assumed nobody else would go – or admit to wanting to go (KMJ was supposed to come too but she skipped off to Vegas with Sara instead). There we were hanging out in our seats surrounded by giggly teenage girls, yelling at each other to talk so we could hear, when across the big screen it told us to text Beyonce to get upgraded seats. So we didcimg4147. And D won! We turned into giggly teenage girls and raced to get our FRONT ROW SEATS!!

Being excited to see Beyonce is one thing. Seeing her from the first row was a whole different level of excitement. I couldn’t stop looking at her. She had dancers and a band, even shirtless guys that you could wash clothes off their chests; but all I wanted to look at was her. I was mesmerized I guess, by her flawless face, amazing moves and facial expressions that made me think she was singing only to us.   (We’re pretty positive she waved at D and smiled at me while I was taking pictures.)  All along I was less excited about her singing and more excited about the production itself- but I underestimated. She is good. Really, really good. Who cares that she rhymes “minute” with “minute.”

I saw and loved Beyonce and am proud to admit it!  You can see our “from the front row” pictures here.

My Favorites

My Favorites

I feel very lucky to have such great friends.

While this weekend wasn’t exceptionally adventurous, I did get to catch up with a lot of my favorite people. Some in person, some over the telephone and I’ll even count the text messages. I love knowing that I might not have talked to someone for several weeks, or even months, but it doesn’t matter because we can always pick up where we left off.  That’s when you know you’ve got it good.

I’ve got it real good.
