Ken Griffey, Jr. signed back on with the Mariner’s this week, bringing him back to Seattle for the 2009-2010 baseball season. People here in Seattle have been beside themselves about “the kid” coming home. I haven’t quite understood the excitement as he’s old and not “a kid” anymore. What is with all the hype? Kevin tried to explain it to me, “he’s a legend, it’s the kid, etc.” but said I would probably appreciate it more if I had lived here during Griffey’s glory days. Maybe so.
I tried to at least pretend I was excited since everyone else here is. But then we watched “In My Own Words” on FSN, featuring Griffey and he seemed less than thrilled himself to be coming back, so I decided my under-excitement was justified. Poor Angie Mentink who had to interview him. She asked him question after question feeding him gimmes to stroke the undying Seattle fans and he couldn’t. He wouldn’t. Kevin said it was like he was on an agenda to prove he was a good family man. Griffey, you can be a good dad and still be excited about coming back to a city that adores you. If you’re not, at least fake it!
Kevin and I went to Spokane this weekend to visit “my kids,” Allison and Tyler. No longer shy around Uncle Kevin, Allison found a new best friend. And Tyler was comfy whomever’s arms he ended up in. They’re really special kids (not to mention adorable). The kind I can get excited about.
